Cosmetic ear surgery, or otoplasty, performed in our Media, Pennsylvania office near Philadelphia and Delaware, provides a method for setting protruding ears closer to the head or reducing the size of large ears. Otoplasty is an option for patients five years and older. Many times, as children with large or prominent ears enter school, they become targets for teasing and ridicule. Otoplasty effectively addresses problems so that children can integrate well with their peers. Adults that are self-conscious about the size of their ears can also benefit from cosmetic ear surgery. To learn more about otoplasty, contact our facial plastic surgeon in Media, Pennsylvania (located near Delaware). Our facial plastic surgeon Jonathan Pontell, M.D. is a well-known expert in otoplasty surgery and serves the residents of the Philadelphia Main Line and the surrounding communities with beautiful cosmetic surgery results.
Patients range in age from 5 years to adulthood. Contact cosmetic surgeon Jonathan Pontell to learn more about whether you or your child may be a candidate for otoplasty.
Also known as "ear pinning," otoplasty is a relatively simple procedure with little downtime. After undergoing otoplasty surgery, many of our patients, both young and old, feel more confident and less self-conscious about their appearance. Some of our adult patients also choose rhinoplasty or chin augmentation surgery in order to bring further balance to the face.
Children are done under general anesthesia. Many adults choose to have the surgery done under local anesthesia.
During the otoplasty procedure, Dr. Jonathan Pontell makes an incision on the back of the ear along the area where ear cartilage joins to the head. If the ear protrudes too far from the head, Dr. Pontell will reshape and sculpt the ear cartilage so that the ear sits closer to the head. After the cartilage is reshaped, Dr. Pontell will close the incision with stitches so that the ear maintains its new position.

After otoplasty surgery, the head is wrapped in a bandage to ensure that the ears stay in the correct position, and healing begins. After a few days, the bandage is replaced with a smaller, less bulky headband. There will be some pain or throbbing in the ears for the first few days after surgery. However, Dr. Pontell can prescribe pain medication to control the pain. Sutures should dissolve or be removed within seven days. Otoplasty patients should not sleep on their side for the first two weeks after surgery.
After the ears have healed completely, there will typically be a small white scar on the back side of the ears. Because of the placement of the incisions in cosmetic ear surgery, the scars should be virtually unnoticeable.
