Hair Loss Treatment
Hair Loss for Men
It is normal to shed about 50 to 100 hairs a day, but since we have about a million strands of hair on our scalps, this amount of hair loss does not cause noticeable thinning. Also, gradual thinning is a normal part of aging. As we become old, our hair naturally starts to thin out. most common cause is called male pattern baldness. This type of hair loss accounts for about 95% of cases and is usually caused by a combination of hormonal activity and heredity. Hair follicles in the scalp get smaller and over time develop a shortened hair growth cycle. Men typically notice hair loss around their hairline and/or top of their scalp.
Hair Loss for Women
Hair loss in women can be triggered by numerous medical conditions as well as various lifestyle factors such as extreme stress, diets, and childbirth. Common medical causes of hair loss in women include:
- Thyroid problems (producing too much or too little thyroid hormone)
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a chronic hormonal imbalance with numerous side effects including hair loss.
- Alopecia areata, in which the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks healthy hair follicles and causes hair to fall out in patches.
As a starting point, hair loss experts recommend testing for thyroid problems and hormone imbalances. In many cases, hair will grow back once the cause is addressed.
Emotional impact of hair loss can affect the way both men and women look or think about themselves and can have a huge effect on self-confidence.
SmartGraft offers you a minimally invasive office procedure to replace or restore your lost hair and hairline.
What is SmartGraft?
SmartGraft is the most advanced minimally invasive hair restoration device for both men and women. Developed by physicians, medical scientists and engineers, SmartGraft allows physicians to perform hair restoration procedures more efficiently, safely, and in less time, while delivering natural, permanent results.
How Does SmartGraft Work?
The first step is an initial consultation with Dr Pontell. Dr Pontell will ask about your medical history and perform a scalp evaluation before outlining a recommended strategic plan. He will explain the procedure in detail and determine the number of grafts needed for an effective and natural-looking result specific to your goals.
On the day of your procedure, Dr Pontell will explain each step of the procedure once more and get your approval before starting. In most cases a mild sedative can be given to help you relax. You will need to consult with Dr Pontell to see if this is an option and make arrangements for transportation home. Next, a tech will shave a small area at the back of your head. You do not have to get a buzz cut. Depending on the length of your hair, an area can be shaved in small sections to allow you to hide the donor area after the procedure.
The area where the hair is to be implanted will be prepped and local anesthetic will be applied to numb the area. While your scalp is anesthetized, Dr Pontell will use the SmartGraft device to gently remove the grafts from the donor area. SmartGraft allows Dr Pontell to immediately collect, sort, count and store each graft in a sterile controlled environment prior to implantation. This promotes graft survival and improves their ability to regrow for better results.
After all grafts have been collected, the implantation site is prepped and local anesthetic is applied. Dr Pontell will carefully and strategically create tiny openings no larger than a pinprick for the grafts to be implanted. This part of the procedure is very important as the angle, density and placement of each graft will determine how natural-looking the results will be.
After your SmartGraft Procedure
The average SmartGraft hair transplant procedure takes five to six hours from start to finish, depending on the number of grafts required to achieve desired results. After the procedure and a brief rest period, you are ready to go home. You may be able to wear a loose fitting hat on the way home. All patients are advised to make arrangements for someone to take them home safely, but this is required if a mild sedative is used during the procedure.
Dr Pontell will give you comprehensive instructions on what to expect in the coming weeks and how to care for your newly transplanted hair. Most physicians recommend that you shampoo the day after the procedure using a “cup wash” method.
Most patients can return to work the following day and resume full activity, including their fitness and sports regimen, within a few short days. In most cases, evidence of the transplant goes undetected by others until months later when they notice your fuller, natural looking head of hair.
Newly transplanted hair grows naturally in several phases. During the first several weeks your hair will take root and then begin to shed. This is perfectly normal. You will see new hair in about three months, followed by a noticeable improvement in six months and full growth at 12 to 14 months. Once your new hair has grown in, you will be able to care for it just like when you had it the first time!
Is SmartGraft painful?
No. It’s an in-office procedure rather than a complicated surgery. Your physician will use a local anesthetic to numb the area where he or she is working. Most of the time you can watch videos or listen to music while the procedure is going on.
Why should I consider SmartGraft?
SmartGraft is superior to other hair restoration devices because:
- It gives you better results in less time, and it’s ideal for both men and women.
- It incorporates the most critical component of hair restoration — the ability for your physician to implant hair grafts in just the right spots to properly frame your face.
- It can harvest grafts from other parts of the body, such as chest, back and face, for better results
When will my hair start to grow?

Is SmartGraft suitable for both men and women?
Yes. Because SmartGraft is a minimally invasive procedure, it is a viable option for both men and women looking to restore their own real hair.
