Chin augmentation allows the size, shape, and projection of your chin to be altered for a more attractive balance between the nose and other features.

Chin augmentation is a cosmetic surgery performed to reshape or enhance the size and overall appearance of the chin. Most commonly, this is achieved with the insertion of a customized chin implant, but it can also be done by carefully reshaping the jaw bones.

What Is Chin Augmentation?

Because the chin shape and nose size work together to create overall facial harmony, when a chin is too small or underprojected, it can distract from the attractiveness of the rest of the face. Chin augmentation surgically enhances or reshapes the chin to create a more proportionate balance with the rest of the facial features. This can be achieved by adding an implant or reshaping the jaw bones. Chin augmentation refines the bone contours for a more attractive jawline.

Your Initial Consultation

Before your procedure, you will meet with Dr. Pontell or Dr. Weng to discuss your goals and concerns. They will assess your facial anatomy to help you decide if a chin augmentation in Philadelphia will help you achieve the most aesthetically pleasing result. Our doctor may recommend combining one or more procedures with your chin enhancement surgery – such as rhinoplastyfacelift surgery, or blepharoplasty – to create balanced facial proportions.

Patients can explore our before and after gallery of facial enhancement procedures to get an idea of the possible results. Our facial plastic surgeons often use computer imaging to show patients their potential results, so they can see if chin augmentation will help them achieve their surgical goals. For patients who are not ready for surgery, our doctor may advise injectable dermal filler treatments to help achieve temporary but effective chin augmentation with JUVÉDERM® Voluma or Restylane® Lyft.

Expectations

Procedure

Chin augmentation is performed under general anesthesia, local anesthesia, or intravenous sedation. To begin the procedure, an incision is made underneath the chin. Chin augmentation requires relatively small incisions that are placed in inconspicuous areas and should be barely noticeable once healed.

Chin implants come in all different shapes and sizes to meet each patient’s needs, and our doctor often customizes them for each patient. Once the implant is in place, the incision is closed with sutures designed to produce the least visible scar.

Recovery

Patients should arrange for a designated driver to take them to and from surgery. It is recommended that patients sleep in an elevated position for at least one week. Our doctor has patients restrict their diet to only soft foods for ten days for the initial stage of healing.

Patients may experience some pain and discomfort, but the pain should not be severe and can be alleviated with prescription and over-the-counter Tylenol® medications throughout the recovery process. Sutures are removed after nine days. The recovery process lasts about two weeks, after which patients can resume exercise.

Results

The results of your chin augmentation in Philadelphia will last a lifetime. However, the procedure does not halt the aging process. Patients should follow a proper skin care regimen, a healthy diet, and an exercise plan to maintain the best outcome possible. Dr. Pontell or Dr. Weng consults patients on such matters, ensuring they have a clear guide to care for their skin for years to come.
