Chin Reduction

For those with chins that are too large in proportion to the other features, chin reduction can create a more flattering appearance by reducing the projection or width of the chin to bring it into balance with the rest of your face.

What Is Chin Reduction?

Chin reduction is a surgical procedure that reduces an overlarge chin by removing excess bone and tissue to achieve better harmony of the facial features. This procedure is customized for each individual’s unique needs and aesthetic preferences, resulting in the most attractive balance for the patient’s facial anatomy.

Expectations

Consultation

Dr. Pontell or Dr. Weng will meet with you before your procedure to discuss your goals for reducing the size of your chin. They will examine your chin and facial features and help you understand the details of the chin reduction procedure, using computer imaging to help you visualize your potential results.

If the aesthetic concern is a double chin with extra skin or fat under the jawline, a facelift, neck lift, or liposuction may be more appropriate. Our facial plastic surgeon may recommend combining other procedures with your chin reduction, such as a brow lift, facelift, rhinoplasty, or other surgeries that will augment your results and achieve beautiful facial proportions.

Surgical Procedure

Chin reduction is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. During chin reduction surgery, an incision is made on the underside of the chin. This incision is relatively small and placed precisely, so the scarring is minimal and barely noticeable once healed.

Dr. Pontell or Dr. Weng will reshape and remove some of the bone structure and soft tissues through the incision to create the desired chin shape. Once complete, the incision is meticulously closed to produce the least possible scarring. The entire surgery lasts about an hour, and most patients can return home between one and two hours after the procedure.

Recovery

After surgery, you can go home with a friend or family member to help you. Our doctors typically recommend that patients sleep in an elevated position for at least one week. They will also restrict you to a soft food diet for ten days as you heal.

During your recovery period, patients may experience some discomfort, but the pain should not be significant and can be treated with prescription and over-the-counter Tylenol® medications. After nine days, the sutures will be removed. By the end of two weeks, your immediate post-op recovery period will be complete, and you will be able to resume exercise.

Results

Due to swelling and facial settling, it will take several weeks to a few months to see the full results of your chin reduction surgery. The ultimate results of chin reduction are permanent and will last a lifetime.

Do keep in mind that the procedure does not stop the aging process. To ensure your facial skin remains firm and attractive, follow a good skincare regimen and continue with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Dr. Pontell or Dr. Weng will talk with you about the best practices to ensure you are set up and fully prepared with an effective regimen to maintain your results long-term.
